Remember the movie Castaway? Remember watching Tom Hank’s character trapped on a deserted island trying to survive day by day? If you do, you’d have a pretty good idea of what Lost in Blue 2 is all about. Lost in Blue 2 is part of ’s Survival Kid’s series which appeared on the Gameboy Color in the U.S.

Plot Summary
Lost in Blue 2 follows the adventures of Jack and Amy, two teenagers trapped on a deserted island after their cruise ship sinks. Shortly after washing ashore the pair finds a nearby cave and takes shelter inside. You must help the pair survive on the island by hunting, fishing, gathering water and firewood. The ultimate goal of the game is to find a way to get off the island and return home. To do that, you must explore the island which features beaches, grasslands, jungles, swamps, even an ancient temple.

At the start, you choose whether you want to play as either Jack or Amy. Each one has different strengths and weaknesses. For instance, Jack can climb higher than Amy, allowing him to scale cliffs faster. Amy is better at cooking and finding food.

Gameplay is divided between the top and bottom screens of the Nintendo DS. The bottom screen is where a lot of the action takes place. You see your character, move, and interact with the environment with the bottom screen.

The top screen shows how your characters are doing, an overview map of the island, or a map of the region you happen to be in. All of these can be switched around.

Most of the time you’ll use the directional pad and the four buttons on the DS to control the game, but there are times when you’ll use the stylus, such as when you’re cooking, fighting an animal or fishing.

Both Jack and Amy have 4 meters that show their HP (health points), and how hungry, thirsty, and tired they are. All three of these affect HP. If one or more of the meters reach 0, your HP starts to fall. If it reaches 0, your character dies and it’s game over. The key to this game is balancing these meters while exploring your temporary home.

This game is hard. I won’t lie to you about that. There’s a steep learning curve to this game. The good news is once you land in that curve you can develop a “rhythm” to the game, and you’ll find it’s a lot easier to survive each day.

Not too much in this area. You can fish using spears you craft. All you see is a shadow under the water and the shadow gets skewered. You also hunt animals, such as deer, rabbits, fowl, and wolves (yes wolves). For most game, you have to shoot it with a bow and arrow. Nothing graphic is shown with this. The animal falls over leaving a piece of meat behind and sometimes a piece of fur and lard.

Some animals like the wolf, tiger, and alligator won’t go down without a fight. In this event, you most dodge the animal’s attack, and then counter-attack with your spear, bow, or fist. There’s no blood shown in any of these encounters, and, in the case of the tiger and gator, the animal flees upon defeat.

At the beginning, Amy exclaims “Thank God” after discovering neither of them is hurt, and much later on one character says d*** twice but that’s the strongest I’ve seen in this game; the latter can be avoided completely as long as you don’t explore the temple in its entirety

Sexual Content
At one point, the two teens discover a hot spring, and there’s the option to have them bathe together. Amy responds to this by telling you she’s a little shy. However, both are shown with their clothes still on even in the water. Still, at first the implication is there that this was not the case, especially if you choose one of them to go in alone. The other one will look away.

Also worth noting is that Amy and Jack live together while on the island. Now, both are shown sleeping in separate beds, but it’s still worth noting in this day and age.

Elements worth noting
This game requires you to budget your time and resources effectively. You learn to plan ahead for each new day. You also have choices with your dialogue. I believe this shows how you must, as in real life, choose your words carefully. Teamwork is also shown as there are obstacles that require both Jack and Amy to overcome.

In summary, Lost in Blue 2 is a fun yet challenging game that never gets old no matter how many days you play it. You can try and escape the island or make it your new home. The difficulty of the game in addition to mild cohabitation, the implications that the hot spring scene can leave on your mind the first time you go there, and the two unnecessary uses of language makes this game more suitable for teens. Still, I would recommend this game if you like a good challenge.
