Introduction: Motorstorm is one of the best looking off-road racer games to date. From bumpy rocky terrain, to steep canyon paths, you will sure feel like you are in a real, yet fictional, Nevada like environment. With great visuals, can the game feature controls, and gameplay as good as it looks? Start your engines, and prepare yourself for: Motorstorm!

Story: There’s not too much story that is really important to the game, it is very simple; it goes something of a big gathering called the Motorstorm Festival. It’s a week of ,anarchy, and raucous music that attracts hundreds of individuals to the desert. We get a little of the story during the video intro and main title screen. There’s videos of people partying, watching the races, and the cars doing tricks. You can watch the full video in the “Extras” menu.

Gameplay: You will race throughout 8 tracks that are dry deserted to muddy pools. You must place in a certain order, depending on the type of track and number of players. There are 3 modes in the game, Play, Online, and Extras, while you can download a time attack mode off the Playstation Store for free.

Controls: Controls for Motorstorm work pretty decent and are mainly simple. You hold down R2 to accelerate, use the left stick to steer, and hold down “x” to boost. You press “square” to perform an action, usually honking with exceptions for dirt-bike and ATVs’. You can also use Six axis to control your vehicle, but it takes time to get used to.

Visuals: Motorstorm is a great looking game period. The environments look amazing and mud and dirt look good. When you boost too long your engine will overheat and explode. I must say, I have never had such a good time watching and crashing in a game. When you crash, you see every cog to bolts fly in every direction and explode. the visuals makes the game experience great.

Motorstorm-5 Motorstorm-4

Violence: There isn’t too much violence in Motorstorm, but enough to mention. First, when you crash and are on a motorcycle or ATV, you will see your player fly in the air and hit the ground. Although this may be a considered violent, it should be noted as the games awesome crash physics that show off a little of the Platstation 3’s potential. Also players will try to ram you off cliffs or run you into rocks. If you are riding an ATV or motorcycle you can punch other racers off their vehicles.

Sexual Themes: None although the festival party you can see people dancing.

Language: On song is titled “Hell Above the Water”

Morals: This is, sadly, where Motorstorm falls off the track. The Festival is filled with “..anarchy and raucous music.” You see people partying outside in the “Festival” video, which also plays on the main menu screen. The soundtrack for the game features many questionable songs. Some use Jesus’ name in vain. Although not all the songs are bad, many, and most, could offend christians. One track is the called the “Rain God Mesa”. If only these things were different, the rating would have been higher.

Motorstorm-6 Motorstorm-2

Conclusion: Motorstorm is a short (there are only 8 tracks) yet enjoyable game that many people will find fun. Motorstorm is a good example of how games can use a simple formula and make it an unforgettable experience. If you have a Playstation 3, I would advise you to buy, if not at least rent it.
